NuvaRing is a tiny, flexible vaginal ring that helps women avoid pregnancy. You insert it for three weeks, then remove it and replace it with a new one a week later. When used as instructed, it is just as effective as the pill, and you don't have to think about taking it every day.

Two different types of hormones are included in it: estrogen and progestogen. These hormones are identical to those produced by the ovaries and to those found in the contraceptive pill.

The vaginal ring is inserted into the vagina. Hormones are released via the vaginal ring. Through the vaginal membranes, the hormones are absorbed. It primarily works by preventing ovulation and thickening the mucus in the cervix so that sperm cannot enter the uterus.

For a period of three weeks, the vaginal ring remains in place. The ring is removed after three weeks. Just wait for a week. You will experience a period-like withdrawal bleed during this week. At the end of the ring-free week, you replace your ring.

The vaginal ring is 99.5 % successful when used appropriately, however, it can be less effective (93 %) in real life if you fail to take it out or put it back on time. Some medications, such as epileptic drugs or herbal treatments, may prevent it from operating effectively. Consult your doctor before beginning any new medications, as you may need to switch to a different type of contraception.

The vaginal ring is suitable for the majority of women. The vaginal ring may be a useful option for women who have difficulty remembering to take their medication on a daily basis. Certain medical conditions preclude the use of a vaginal ring.

NuvaRing Cons

• It does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
• It is not suitable for ladies who are unable to utilize estrogen due to medical reasons.
• There is a little possibility of blood clots forming in the veins (deep vein thrombosis)
• There is a very minimal chance of having a heart attack or having a stroke (this is increased if you smoke, have diabetes, or have high blood pressure)
• Some ladies have difficulty keeping it in place.
• You must remember to remove it after three weeks and replace it with a fresh one a week later. This can be more costly than some medicines.
